Ladies:
Congratulations again on your victory Saturday. You all successfully managed that win-fun cycle -- you had fun, which helped you win, which was fun, which helped you win (and on and on)...
Analyzing the serving stats from Saturday, it paints a very good picture of how the day went. Take a look:
Errors 40 0.00% D's 47 55.32% C's 60 60.00% B's 73 69.86% Aces 34 100.00%
Total 254 ScoringOdds 58.66% ScoringOdds w/o Err 69.63% DefenseOdds (serves b-d) 60.08%
In essence, we served an average of almost 4 errors per game. But we aced only 3 times per game.
Also, there is something that says a lot about our competition and our defense. When we kep the ball in bounds, we scored almost 70% of the time!!! If we also side out at a normal percentage (i.e. around 65% of the time), we will completely crush everyone for the rest of the season.
So how do we do it? We've just got to keep our serves in bounds! In fact, we scored on 60% of our serves that we just kept in bounds -- even when the opponent was able to start a play. When the other team had 3-options passes, we still defended 55% of the time.
Ladies, this is incredible information. Sure, we need to serve aggressively to earn some aces. But as long as we keep our serves in bounds, odds are that we'll actually earn the point regardless of how tough we make it for them.
Feedback? What can we do to gain that mental mindset required to get every serve in bounds? If you have any ideas, please let me know. Perhaps we can talk about it before our match on Tuesday (Which is at 7pm, by the way).
Thanks,Coach Chad |

Your performance at the Toys for Tots tournament on 12/11 was certainly respectable. The team that won the competition indeed had to go through Team VolleyFreak, Jr. And I'm certain that if we had played with more determination and focus, we would have won all three of the games that we barely dropped to them. Congratulations on a job well done. That was certainly a great sign of things to come for you all.
The Toys for Tots tournament was a great warm-up and team-building experience. And with that behind us, our first practice is just a few days from now. It's time to get focused and ready to grow together as a team, and realize our potentials as athletes in the great game of volleyball.
In the next two weeks, please do your best to stay conditioned for a high level of play. Run a mile or two when time allows; make time for some lunges and jump squats; work your core (abs, obliques, and back) as often as possible. Speed and power in this sport start with your feet and your abs so concentrating your conditioning on these areas will make the biggest impact on your performance.
Please consider your individual goals for this year. Do you want to start varsity as a junior? Do you want to dominate the middle? Do you want to improve defensively? Coach Fortin and I are very serious about your individual progress. Please map out your expectations for this season and we will work you to attain those goals.
So, the countdown continues! Have a Happy Holiday and we'll see you all in two weeks,
Coach Chad |
