The 12s Freak of the Week is Rachel Morris for the GaREAT tourney on 2/6. Rachel had a great 1st tournament. She led the team with 24 aces with an ace efficiency of nearly 40%. Rachel also played a critical role in our team's play throughout the day with her solid passing, setting & attacking. Rachel also stepped up in her first role as the down official and did a real nice job.
Other stand out Freaks: - Anna Denny: Anna has been working hard on her passing mechanics and it really showed. She passed REALLY well all day against some of the tougher serving opponents. Great job! - Kimmie Kelly: Several teams struggled with their score keeping duties throughout the day but Kimmie was ROCK SOLID. She handled several discrepancies (incorrect servers) like a pro, even in a hotly contested Gold semi-final match between Maverick & Southwest.

The first tournament of the season is always going to have it's challenges. Mother nature threw the biggest challenge at us with about a foot of snow greeting us early Saturday morning. Coach Kristin got snowed in and the Pressleys spent the majority of the day trying to extract themselves from Wadsworth. The rest of us managed to arrive at relatively snow-free Geneva intact.
Our team did some really solid things for our first tournament. We had a 75% serving percentage (beyond our 70% goal). We managed 3 contacts\attacks on approximately 30% of our volleys (beyond our 25% goal). We qualified to the Gold playoff bracket (1 of our goal of 4). We were just one 4" foot fault from the entire roster successfully serving overhand. All of that is a VERY GOOD starting point for our season. We also faced some strong local clubs and now realize the steps we have to take to compete on their level. Our areas for improvement are consistently passing hard serves & transforming into a true team play mentality. Volleyball is not a sequence of individual plays on the ball amidst other silent, stationary teammates. We must be continually talking & moving as a unit throughout each and every volley. We WILL continue to improve. |
